I Thought Buying the House Was the Hard Part. I Was Wrong.

There should have been fireworks.

Or at least a parade.

After all, I had done the impossible: I bought a house.

I signed approximately 437 documents, smiled awkwardly for a photo holding oversized keys, and drove away convinced I had officially become a Real Adult™.

And then...

Reality arrived.

Week One: The Panic Begins

I remember standing in my kitchen staring at a small drip under the sink. No big deal, I thought. Then my brain began firing off questions at Olympic speed:

  • Is this covered by my home warranty?

  • Wait... did I buy a home warranty?

  • Where is that paperwork?

  • Where did I put the insurance documents?

  • Am I supposed to know who to call?

  • Wasn't there something about shut-off valves?

I looked in:

The junk drawer.

The kitchen counter pile.

The glove compartment.

A reusable grocery bag full of closing paperwork.

And, embarrassingly...the freezer. Don't ask.

Nobody Warned Me About The Mental Load

People tell you:

"Congratulations on your new home!"

Nobody says:

"Congratulations! You are now responsible for remembering:

  • HVAC maintenance

  • HOA rules

  • Appliance warranties

  • Insurance renewals

  • Utility providers

  • Seasonal maintenance

  • Emergency contacts

  • Filter sizes

  • Shut-off valves

  • And approximately 8,000 other things."

Suddenly, homeownership felt less like cozy evenings by the fireplace and more like managing a small business where the business is your house.

The First Year Is Weird

Some days, you feel unstoppable. Other days, you're standing in the hardware store Googling:

"Can I ignore this weird sound my water heater is making?"

The truth is, the first year of homeownership is filled with questions. Questions nobody taught us. Questions we pretend to know the answers to. Questions we whisper into search engines at midnight.

That's Why The New Homeowner Starter Kit Exists

If you're in your first year of homeownership and thinking:

"I hope I'm not forgetting something..."

You're not alone. The New Homeowner Starter Kit was created to help you:

✓ Stay organized

✓ Keep track of important information

✓ Understand key homeownership responsibilities

✓ Feel more confident in your first year

✓ Build good habits from the beginning

Because homeownership shouldn't feel like guessing. So I used the New Homeowner Starter Kit to start writing everything down. I wrote down:

  • My utility companies

  • Emergency numbers

  • And I checked off each task I completed on the

  • Maintenance Schedule

  • First Year Homeowner Timeline

Every time I documented something using the New Homeowner Starter Kit, I learned something. And something unexpected happened. I stopped feeling overwhelmed. Because uncertainty shrinks when you have a system.
